Even with advanced healthcare and improved living conditions, older generations and disabled people face numerous challenges completing tasks that many of us take for granted. What if something did happen to them even within the safety of their home. How would you know in time to be able to help?
Adapting the Yaza IoT platform to Support the Elderly, Impaired and Disabled
A study by BMC Geriatric research discovered that older patients living alone were 50% more likely to need the support of emergency teams and 40% more likely to require more GP doctor visits. Elderly people who live alone are more prone to accidents within the home, such as falls, bad cuts and burns or even, sadly, drowning.
Supporting this, Mersin University’s study found that around 30% of over-65s fall each year and of those who do fall, 60% are likely to fall repeatedly, with 20% to 30% suffering from an injury that could risk premature death.
The difficulty with all this is that family, friends and medical practitioners might not know that an accident has occurred, or the person is in a critical condition.
The statistics are both depressing and difficult to address, because independence for a lot of the older generation is what keeps them going and feeling young and capable.
Add to this, United Nations data states that in 2019 there were 703 million people over the age of 65 in the world. By 2050 it’s expected to reach 1.5 billion people.
The numbers are simply staggering.
So with increasing numbers of elderly people and negative statistics on accidents how did we find a solution?
Yaza has a multi-layered solution that aims to ensure safety for elderly, impaired or disabled people that live alone and offers close ones or the medical support team peace of mind that if anything should happen, they can react immediately.
The Safety Badge (GH5200) is a personal tracker designed to help the weaker amongst us retain their independence but also empower the people to act in a worst-case scenario.
- Geofencing allows you to receive notifications if the person has left the residence for any unplanned reason.
- If they are confused and lost, the tracker will enable you to find them quickly and easily.
- If their health becomes a concern for them a quick click of a button and they can call a caregiver or nursing staff member or even a family member to inform them about their condition.
- If the worst-case scenario happens the person can send an instant emergency notification to advise the people that care that there is a problem.
- If they have fallen or something has happened to them where they can’t trigger the alarm themselves, a man-down alarm will be triggered based on lack of movement. If the person doesn’t respond, an emergency team can be dispatched immediately to visit the person’s location and provide immediate medical attention.
Helping people is a core value that the Yaza team holds close to their hearts. Telecare is our way of showing how much it matters to us.
